1. Observe.

Why, context, challenge.

Observations reveal that the urban plot near the city library on Sa Tatarenka Street, Trostyanets, has evolved through years of informal use by locals. The site features well-worn tertiary pathways and scattered green areas, yet lacks a cohesive, dedicated public space. Community members long for a place that honors their history while offering modern amenities—a space that nurtures quiet reflection, vibrant gatherings, and creative expression. These insights highlight the need for a design that formalizes existing social practices, integrates natural elements, and creates inviting zones for cultural exchange.

3. Approach.

How, strategy, interact

Our approach is encapsulated in the triptych concept, “The Ellipsis of Periods” which divides the space into three interconnected zones. First, the Library Courtyard—an intimate area adjacent to the library for quiet reflection and knowledge exchange. Second, the Plaza of Possibilities—a flexible, expansive zone for markets, concerts, and community events. Third, the Whispering Grove—a secluded area that invites contemplation and playful moments. By incorporating the established local pathways and engaging the community, we aim to create a sustainable, low-maintenance design that preserves the city’s historical essence while adapting to modern cultural needs.

Design

4. Design.

Programmering, development, co-create.

The design transforms a 3360 m² plot into a dynamic public square that serves as the cultural heart of Trostyanets. The Library Courtyard is defined by canopies, strategically placed benches, and an exhibition path that links directly to the library, fostering intimate conversation and quiet study. The Plaza of Possibilities offers a paved, open area adaptable for markets, performances, and festive gatherings, seamlessly incorporating the site’s pre-existing tertiary paths. At the far end, the Whispering Grove creates a tranquil retreat with landscaped green spaces, scattered seating, and gentle lighting to encourage relaxation and play. Sustainable materials and energy-efficient lighting are employed throughout, ensuring safety and year-round usability while honoring the city’s unique narrative of resilience and renewal.
